Green Schools Committee Visit Holmestown

The Green Schools Committee continue to lead the school as we work hard for our first Green Flag. We meet once a month at lunch time.

As part of our work, we visited Holmestown Household Recycling Centre in Wexford. We learned many interesting things and met some birds of prey. These birds are used to keep unwanted pests such as rats and pigeons away from the site.

Some things we learned:

Recycling just one plastic bottle can save the same amount of energy needed to power a 60 watt light bulb for 6 hours!

It takes about 25 recycled soft drink bottles to make one fleece jacket.

Wexford is one of the best counties at sorting recycling properly and avoiding contamination.

Why Recycle?
We all have to do our bit for the environment with the growing effect of Global Warming and the scarcity of landfills.

  • Recycling helps save resources
  • Recycling helps save energy
  • Recycling helps save landfill space
  • Recycling helps create jobs and save money
  • Recycling saves clean air and water

Thanks to Cliona Connolly, Environmental Officer at Wexford County Council and Wexford County Council for organising and sponsoring this trip.
