English

Sounds

  • Jolly Phonic sound ‘ue‘ – sing the song, say the sound, do the action. Draw pictures of words containing the ‘ue’ sound e.g. statue, tissue, blue, glue, etc. If capable, write the words under the pictures
  • Continue to revise all sounds completed to date

Word Boxes /Reading

  • Read Word Box 5A and 6A. Most of the words in these word boxes have a digraph (two letter sound).  Can you spot the digraph in each word below before you read it
  • Continue to read books regularly to your child at home

Tricky Words

  • New tricky words ‘live‘ and ‘give‘- Write out these tricky words three times. Put it into a sentence orally
  • Revise all tricky words

Handwriting

  • Handwriting booklet: Letters u and v (for those who have these letters)
  • “Letter Formation Workbook” pages 22 and 23 (for those missing the letters in booklet) www.twinkl.ie/offer : Under “new to Twinkl” create an account and make sure to enter the offer code IRLTWINKLHELPS )
    Letter u – Curve down and up and down once more. Little u is a cup that is ready to pour.
    Letter v – Slant down first then up like so. The upside down volcano is ready to blow.

Dictation sentences – Call out the following 5 sentences:

  1. The man is sad.
  2. The dog sat up.
  3. The bus is red.
  4. The pig is fat.
  5. The cat ran and ran.

*Remind the children that we put a capital letter at the start of a sentence and a full stop at the end.

Maths

  • Please complete the following pages (use the CJ Fallon website for the online work)
  • Interactively online pages 106, 107 (Days of the week), 108, 109 – Vertical Addition
  • Busy at Maths home/school links pages 33, 34, 35 (as seen below)
  • Teach your child the order of the days of the week. Tell them that Monday to Friday are the weekdays with Saturday and Sunday known as the weekend. Learn the song below to the tune of ‘Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star’

  • Ask your child to find the name of any day on objects around the house e.g. calendars, newspapers, magazines, mobile phones, etc. Help your child find the day of his/her birthday on a calendar
  • Continue to practise writing numbers 0-5 correctly
  • Continue to practise counting skills, counting from 0 – 10 forwards and backwards (or higher if capable)

  • Hearing page 47 – Chat about how we use our ears to hear different sounds; loud or soft, nearby or far away, high or low. Discuss how our sense of hearing can protect us from danger e.g. you may hear a car horn beeping to warn you or a fire alarm if there is a fire, etc. Chat about animal noises and what animals you would find in a zoo. Ask your child to name his/her favourite animal at the zoo and what noise it makes. Have a look on the Dublin Zoo website to see the different animals (www.dublinzoo.ie)
  • Loud and Soft Sounds page 48 – Identify and differentiate between loud and soft sounds. Listen to the story Peace at Last and discuss the sounds made in the story that kept Daddy Bear awake(click link below)

Art

  • Make a rainmaker! (Link with our sounds topic in our Small World book)
  • You will need: a tube e.g. a pringles box or large smarties box, paint, sellotape, rice
  1. Paint and decorate the tube.
  2. Put some rice in the tube.
  3. Move/Shake the tube from side to side to hear the rice fall.

If the letters are missing then you can download the “Letter Formation Workbook” free from the Twinkl website and do pages 3 and 17 (below) to practise the letters ‘b’ and ‘p’.   • Partitioning objects within zero: Place 5 objects on the table and ask your child: How many objects are in this set? Partition (break up) the set by placing a pencil through the set to show that 0 and 5 make 5. Then ask your child to use the pencil to make as many partitions of five as s/he can, including zero. (2 and 3, 4 and 1, 5 and 0, etc)
  • Continue to practise writing numbers 0-5 correctly
  • Continue to practise counting skills, counting from 0 – 10 forwards and backwards (or higher if capable)

  • In the Morning page 46 – Put the pictures in the correct order. After completing this page, get your child to draw 4 pictures of their night-time routine e.g. Putting on their pyjamas, brushing their teeth, reading a book, going asleep

Art

  • Choose one type of mode of transport that you discussed when completing page 54 in your Small World book and use some crazy art materials from around your home to construct it

Please find below a list of work for the week ahead. Work will be uploaded on a weekly basis from now on. As stated before this work is a general guideline so please adapt it to suit your child and do not feel under pressure to get it all completed just do what you can.

Dictaction

  • Many English words are phonically regular, which means children do not have to learn how to spell them by heart; they can write these words by themselves as long as they can hear the sounds in them. Please help your child practise these skills. Call out these 5 regular words provided and ask your child to write them (do not show them the words); ten, lip, pet, cut, six. Remind them to ‘stretch out’ the words to help them to identify the individual sounds

  • Interactively online pages 99, 100, 101 – Numeral 0 (Zero Rhyme: Around and around and around we go, now we have the number zero)

  • Use playdough to make the numerals 0, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 and place them in the correct order. Find the numeral zero in the environment around them e.g.on calendars, doors, streets, price on items, car registration plates, toys, etc

Work 20th April – 1st May

Dear parents,
Firstly I would like to introduce myself. I am Ms. Gordon and as my maternity leave has come to an end, I will be your child’s class teacher. It is a strange way to have to speak to you all for the first time but hopefully I will get a chance to meet you in person in the near future. I hope you are all keeping safe and well.

Please find below a list of work for the next two weeks. It is best to divide the work out evenly over this time, especially when introducing the new sounds and words. The work below is a general guideline so please adapt it to suit your child. Please do not feel under pressure to complete all the activities, do what you can with your child.

English

Sounds:

  • Moving onto the next two Jolly Phonic sounds (please find these sounds attached at the end of this post)
  • Week 1 ‘th’ – sing the song, say the sound, do the action. Draw a picture of a word containing the ‘th’ sound e.g. thumb, thorn, tooth, path, etc. Write the word under the picture
  • Week 2 ‘qu’ – sing the song, say the sound, do the action. Draw a picture of a word containing the ‘qu’ sound e.g. queen, quilt, quad, etc. Write the word under the picture
  • Continue to revise all sounds completed to date. There are online activities on the Sound Like Phonics programme https://slp.cjfallon.ie/ . Go into Activity Book A or B and click on the sound you wish to revise and you will find videos, stories and games to accompany each sound. You can also access the Jolly Phonics songs on Youtube

  • Introduce the next two tricky words

  • Revise all tricky words (if your child is finding the tricky words hard to remember, just focus on for eg. the first list of tricky words 1-12 before moving on)

Reading

  • Week 1: Introduce your child to Little Book 10: ‘The Spaceship’. Over the next week get your child to practise reading the following new words from their new book: have, flag, said, they
  • Week 2: Read book 10 ( log onto www.edcolearning.ie , username: primaryedcobooks, password: edco2020, click on “Big Box Stories – “My Little Box”, The Spaceship page 91)
  • Continue to read books regularly to your child at home. Remember to get your child involved too; chat about the pictures, predict what they think is going to happen, question them on the story, etc.
  • Storyline Online is an excellent resource also where the children can listen to stories being read to them
  • Oxford Owl is another website the children may use to read simple ebooks (make sure to choose the right age group for them). Some of these ebooks are also audio books which they can listen to and follow the words (www.oxfordowl.co.uk)

Handwriting

  • Handwriting booklet: Complete the next two handwriting pages
  • Week 1: letter ‘r’ (Go straight down, then race on back. r has an arm, like a little rack)
  • Week 2: letter ‘n’ (Go down, hit the ground and your almost done, m has two humps, n has only one)
  • Practise writing your name regularly and neatly

Maths

  • You can access the main Busy at Maths book online and do the pages interactively with your child on the CJ Fallon website. It is a good idea to get your child to do these pages online first before they complete the pages based on these topics in their home/school links book. Please complete the following pages
  • Week 1: Interactively online : pages 93, 94, 95 and in their Busy at Maths home/school links pages 26 & 27
  • Week 2: Interactively online pages 96, 97, 98 and in their Busy at Maths home/school links page 28

Gaeilge (Optional)

  • You can also access their Céim ar Chéim Irish workbook online on the CJ Fallon website and look at the words/phrases on the pages on each of the topics
  • Topaic: Picnic – Céim ar Chéim page 48 & 49 online
  • Foclóir nua – picnic, úll, banana, cupán, ruga, plátaí, taephota
    Say and point to these new words in the picture. You could also get your child to find these items at home and label them in Irish
